Envision waking up one morning, checking the news shortly thereafter, and learning the United States passed legislation officially banning all forms of pornography. I imagine that across the nation people of all backgrounds, motivations and opinions would have varied emotions at such a pivotal moment in American history. Some individuals may be shocked, angry, and bewildered while others may be glad and with an immense sense of relief.
For myself, there would be an unspeakable feeling of joy. As a Marriage & Family Therapist, I daily sit with the pain of countless people whose lives have been marred, traumatized and in many ways destroyed by the dark phenomenon of pornography. I can recall poignant moments of time, sitting with fellow human beings, and watching them cry out in anguish because they either find themselves bound to this vile substance, or have learned their spouse or partner has violated the sacred sexual bond of their relationship by their usage.
It is because of these experiences, and because of how pornography almost destroyed my own life and marriage, that I would wake up on such a day and rejoice knowing that my children, my dear friends, and the people of our great society would be protected from this highly addictive, soul deadening, relationship destroying and sexually exploitative medium. By the way, none of those descriptors are hyperbole, they are a matter of truth.
I realize all of this may seem like an exercise in considering impossibilities, but I say to you, "look again." Look again through the eyes of faith and tell me what you see. When I turn the pages of Scripture, I find that it is written:
"The things which are impossible with men are possible with God." - Luke 18:27
Therefore, I will tell you what I see. This will be a different world in the days to come. The liberation of the hearts and minds of millions of people from pornography will be seen, and the sex trade itself will cease. By God's grace and power, no devil in hell, and no person on earth, will keep us from seeing this objective accomplished.
Amen.
